Scientific program

The Scientific Program of the XVI CGCh is framed in its motto “New Challenges for an Evolving Territory” and focuses on the advances from which the Earth Sciences contribute to the sustainable development – economic, social and cultural – of our society and its environment.

The Scientific Program of the XVI CGCh is structured on the basis of 06 Thematic Areas, TA. Each Thematic Area, TA, consists of Sessions proposed by the geoscientific community and the participation of a renowned speaker.

THEMATIC AREAS

Thematic Area 1 (TA1) - Basic Geoscience Research

General Description: Studies on the characterization of deep and surficial geological processes that contribute to the understanding of the evolution of the earth's crust and its surface evidence, as well as studies related to planetary sciences.

Thematic Area 1 is made up of the following Sessions.  Abstracts should be submitted to the Session whose description best fits the nature of your work.

Thematic Area 2 (TA2) - Innovation and Technology in Geosciences

General Description: New techniques and advances in the field of geochemistry, mineralogy, geophysics, geoinformatics and the exploration of deep and hidden resources, together with the quantification and representation of geological processes.

Thematic Area 2 consists of the following Sessions abstracts should be submitted to the Session whose description best fits the nature of your work.

Thematic Area 3 (TA3) - Water and Energy Resources

General Description: Exploration and assessment of water and energy resources, cryosphere challenges (glaciers and polar areas) and emerging trends in geothermal.

Thematic Area 3 is made up of the following Sessions. Abstracts should be submitted to the Session whose description best fits the nature of your work.

Thematic Area 4 (AT4) - Mineral Resources

General Description: Studies of processes and systems of deposit formation, exploration techniques and evaluation of mineral resources, contribution of geoscientific disciplines (geotechnics, geomechanics, geometallurgy, hydrogeology, mine geology and mine planning) for their conversion into mineral reserves, in addition to the emerging concern of critical and strategic minerals required by mankind.

Thematic Area 4 is made up of the following Sessions. Abstracts should be submitted to the Session whose description best fits the nature of your work.

Thematic Area 5 (AT5) - Applied Geosciences

General Description: Contributions on topics such as the study and evaluation of geological hazards and risks, geology applied to civil works and environmental geosciences, territorial planning, prevention and decontamination of industrial areas.

Responsible: Natalia Garrido, Chilean Association of Geological Engineering, ACHIGEO. National Geology and Mining Service, SERNAGEOMIN.

Thematic Area 5 is conformed by the following Sessions. Abstracts should be sent to the Session whose description best fits the nature of your work.

Thematic Area 6 (TA6) - Geosciences and Society

General Description: Geosciences projected to different areas of society, from the teaching of these, their historical development and impact, their correct professional application within a gender and diversity perspective, characterization of geodiversity for the conservation of geological heritage and their impact on the planning and use of the territory.

Principal Researchers: Luisa Pinto, Universidad de Chile. José Cabello, Geological Society of Chile.

Thematic Area 6 is made up of the following Sessions. Abstracts should be sent to the Session whose description best fits the nature of your work.
